SF STATE ALUMNI AMONG PROTESTERS AT MAY DAY RALLY
Protesters joined the longshoremen in their May Day shut-down of the West Coast ports by meeting at the Longshore Union Hall in support of workers’ rights and opposition to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Hundreds rallied in support of the planned shutdown of the ports and marched to Justin Herman Plaza, where dozens of guest speakers addressed the crowd.
The protest had been planned for months by West Coast port unions as a coordinated action to simultaneously voice dissent.
“We need a mass movement to stop this government, to change this society,” said Steve Zeltzer, a labor media organizer and SF State alumnus who participated in the 1968 campus strikes.
Zeltzer recalled working both as a library employee during the 1968 strike and at the ports, saying the principles fought for decades earlier remained relevant.
SF State students also conducted a class walkout in opposition to proposed fee hikes, framing their participation as part of May Day solidarity with the working class.
Actor Danny Glover, an SF State alumnus and former leader of the 1968 strikes, spoke at the rally and voiced his support for the protest.
“We’re talking about 40 years ago, and that’s how my life has been up till today,” Glover said, reflecting on his continued involvement in activism.
